VET Courses Offer Different Pathways to Success for Students

There are many pathways to success as James Bet illustrated clearly this year.

James, one of Newington College Vocational Education and Training (VET) students, was awarded The Youth Partnership VET Excellence Award for his outstanding contribution to Vocational Education and Training in Business Services.

‘It was a surprise,’ says James.

‘I went to NSW Parliament House with my dad David where the awards and a breakfast were held.’

James began his Certificate III in Business Studies in Year 11 in Newington alongside his other core subjects such as English and Maths. Business Studies focuses on developing practical workplace skills in a business services environment and includes key components such as organisational abilities, customer relations, utilising different technologies and software and workplace health and safety

‘As part of the course, I also completed workplace training off campus which gave me invaluable insight into how businesses operate in a professional environment,’ says James.

‘This combination of study and practical experience really prepared me for the workforce and helped me excel in the subject.’

Newington offers three VET subjects: construction, hospitality and business services, and students study a syllabus set by TAFE and NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). During Years 11 and 12, VET students also complete 70 hours of work placement off campus, once a week each year. James spent his on-the-job time with Clark Estate Agents in Waterloo and labour hire company, Christies People in Balmain.

Both experiences, he says, provided ‘a comprehensive understanding of office dynamics, client relations, and administrative functions. These experiences have equipped me with practical skills and knowledge that will be beneficial in my future career endeavour.’

‘I saw studying Business Services through VET as a subject which was less academically demanding than others and would provide a qualification and give opportunity for employment straight out of school.’

Ms Vanessa Santoro, Newington VET Business Services teacher and Mr Stephen Roberts, Head of Careers, were both intrinsic in assisting James.

‘They helped me realise my passion, what career I would like to pursuit and how to get there through TAFE and now university. They are both amazing teachers.’

James who would like a career in the real estate market has enrolled in a Bachelor of Business at University. He is hoping to start working part time with Clark Estate Agents as he completes his studies.

‘It’s nice to finish school with the HSC, some real work experience and a Cert III in VET Business Services. It just makes employment easier and life after school less worrying.’
