Named Scholarships

Newington College offers several scholarships to students who demonstrate commitment to their studies, involvement in community and co-curricular activities, character and leadership.

The Halse Rogers (ON 1901) Scholarship

The Halse Rogers Scholarship (ON 1901) is available to students in Year 7, Year 9 and Year 11. It provides an opportunity for students with a balanced range of achievements to benefit from the opportunities presented at Newington College.

Students should demonstrate strong academic merit, character and leadership abilities, and strength in co-curricular activities including drama, visual or performing arts and sport.

The Halse Rogers (ON 1901) Scholarship covers full or part tuition fees.

Named after Sir Percival Halse Rogers, the 1900 Dux of Newington College and Newington’s first Rhodes Scholar, this scholarship is for students who demonstrate commitment to:

  • Learning
  • Wellbeing, Character and Service
  • Spirituality, Values and Ethics
  • Co-curricular Engagement
  • Community in Partnership

The F. Stretton Jeffs (ON 1933) Scholarship

The F. Stretton Jeffs (ON 1933) Scholarship is available to students entering Year 11 who would not otherwise have the opportunity of a Newington education.

Students should demonstrate strong academic merit, character and leadership abilities, and strength in co-curricular activities including drama, visual or performing arts and sporting or outdoor pursuits.

The F. Stretton Jeffs (ON 1933) Scholarship covers 100 per cent of tuition fees.

The F. Stretton Jeffs (ON 1933) Scholarship is named in honour of F. Stretton Jeffs, the son of a Baptist minister who was fortunate to be offered a Newington scholarship for his final two years of study during the Great Depression.

The F. Stretton Jeffs (ON 1933) Scholarship covers 100 per cent of tuition fees for two years for a boy entering Year 11.

Uniform, textbooks, co-curricular, excursion and other ancillary costs are not covered.

The King Family Scholarship

The King Family Scholarship (Tony King ON 1982) was offered for the first time in 2023. It aims to recognise and inspire excellence in creative endeavours. This includes, but is not limited to, visual arts, music, design and technology and computing. The recipient must also demonstrate outstanding academic effort and integrity.

The King Family Scholarship is available to students entering Year 7 or Year 9 and covers 100 per cent of tuition fees.

The King Family Scholarship gives particular attention to the range of a student’s achievements. Students should demonstrate an affinity for:

  • Creative excellence and potential to contribute. Students applying will be passionate, creatively talented and have great potential to contribute their unique characteristics to the diverse fabric of Newington College
  • Strong academic effort and character. Students applying will have strong reports and references from their school. All applicants are required to sit the Newington scholarship examination. A demonstrated record of good academic progress, effort and potential will be required
  • Igniting co-curricular passion. Students applying will demonstrate their creativity through creative works, portfolios and/or performances to date; achievements, recognition and/or awards received in their chosen field of co-curricular or academic interest and be a leader who will share that passion for the benefit of their peers.

The Moffitt Family Scholarship

The Moffitt Family Scholarship is available to a student entering Year 7.

Students should demonstrate strong academic merit, character and leadership abilities, and strength in co-curricular activities including drama, visual or performing arts and sport.

The Moffitt Family Scholarship covers 100 per cent of tuition fees.

Phillip Moffitt (ON 1982) is the Chairman of the Newington College Foundation. The Moffitt Family Scholarship is named in honour of his family’s contribution to the College. It was first awarded in 2017. 

The Mulford Scholarship

The Mulford Scholarship is available to students entering Year 7 who would not otherwise have the opportunity of a Newington education. The scholarship has a broad focus and considers the needs of individual recipients.

Students should demonstrate outstanding citizenship and character traits, leadership potential, and an attitude that reflects effort and determination.

They should be a positive influence on others and be willing to be an excellent contributor to enhance the Newington ethos.

The Mulford Scholarship covers full or part tuition fees.

Dr David Mulford retired in 2018 after leading Newington College for 10 of its most successful years. The scholarship named in his honour will foster even greater diversity at Newington College.

How to apply

All students applying for a Newington College Scholarship must sit the scholarship test. The test is administered by Academic Assessment Services.

Applications for 2025 scholarships are now closed.

Applications for 2026 scholarships will open in late 2024.
