Serving College and Community
One of the core tenants of what makes Newington Newington is the understanding that our community is a place to give back, not simply gain. Central to this are our ‘servant leaders’, Year 12 students who demonstrate empathy, the ability to listen, stewardship and care for the wellbeing of others.
As we congratulate our new 2026 School, Boarding, House, Summer Sport and Co-curricular Activity student leaders, we celebrate Newington’s long tradition and commitment to helping develop young people who serve others, before themselves.

According to Mrs Julie Daly, College Archivist, the first mention of prefects is outlined in an insert in the 1889 issue of ‘The Newingtonian’, 136 years ago.
‘Among recent improvements we may notice the establishment of the prefectorial system, which is now working smoothly and efficiently under the experienced management of Mr Watson,’ The Newingtonian reads.

Mr Alfred Keen Watson was a senior assistant master and housemaster.
‘He established the leadership positions to awaken “the moral responsibility of the elder boys… enlisting their sympathy and cooperation in the maintenance of order and good conduct”,’ adds Mrs Daly.
‘In this first instance with prefects, the student leaders were separated into resident and non-resident prefects; six students who were boarders and six who were day students were appointed on the grounds of character, position and influence.’
Tragically, Mr Watson died the following year from typhoid fever, aged only 30, however, the leadership innovation he introduced to the College continues to this day.

2026’s leaders take up Mr Watson’s mantle. Driven by the motto, Act Brave, Serve True, Support New, Senior Prefect Gil G says he and his fellow leaders are committed to their roles, and fellow students.
‘As leaders, we commit to leading with service, acting with courage, and authentically supporting our Newington community with compassion.’
They follow in the footsteps of Frederick Phillips, who 127 years earlier became Newington’s inaugural Senior Prefect in 1898.

Archivist Mrs Julie Daly says Frederick Phillips’ valete highlighted how he ‘always wielded a large influence for good.’ College records also point to this being the year Archibald Moffat became the College’s first Senior Boarding Prefect. The second senior prefect was James Clarence Webb. Webb was the grandson of Edmund Webb, after whom the College’s boarding house is named.
The introduction of our House system in 1932 increased student leadership roles within our first four Houses; Manton, Fletcher and Kelynack. Two extra Houses were added in 1946, and a further three in 1954. In 2022, the College doubled the number of Houses from eight to 16, to provide extra opportunities for leadership and wellbeing by ensuring each and every Newington student is known, seen and heard.
