Newsroom – Year 8 Play shines a light on talent past and present

Newsroom – Year 8 Play shines a light on talent past and present

Actor and musician Liam Dundon (ON 2021) returns to Newington this week to direct Year 8 Play, The Trolleys, which debuts Wednesday evening in the Duckmanton Theatre at our Senior campus in Stanmore. Before the curtain goes up on the talented young cast, Liam chatted about acting, directing and a world where light is our most valuable commodity.

Q: Can you please give us a quick recap of which productions you were in at Newington?

Liam: I was involved in several drama productions during my Newington years starting with my own Year 8 production, Where in the world is Frank Sparrow? My personal highlights include being the lead in the school’s musical Urinetown in 2020, as well as appearing in the senior production, Cosi, in 2021.

Q: Was drama always part of the plan for you?

Liam: Definitely. I studied Drama in Years 11 and 12 and it was a formative part of my post school plan. I went on to study a Bachelor of Music Theatre at the University of Adelaide and I graduated from there this year and moved back to Sydney to pursue my career in performance and direction. To date, I’ve appeared in Candide with the State Theatre of South Australia and the State Opera of South Australia as well as Swan Lake with the Australian Ballet.

Q: How did it happen that you are back on stage at Newington wearing the director’s hat?

Liam: I have maintained a great working relationship with the Head of Drama, Mr Paul Eastway, who asked me back to work with the cast of this year’s musical, Catch Me If You Can, which I really enjoyed. During this time, an opportunity arose to direct the Year 8 play, which I was very keen to accept. This is my first time directing in a solo capacity and it’s been a great learning experience as it’s given me proper scope of all the roles a director must fulfil.

Q: The Trolleys tells the story of a world where light has become a precious resource.  What’s the appeal of the play and how is it particularly suited to young thespians?

Liam: It really gives younger characters the chance to thrive… there’s a spotlight on the endearing emotions and experiences of young people that is not always prevalent in other plays. It also has some wonderfully varied and unique characters to bring to life. So, while it’s a grounded play that is youth led, its message and overall themes are nuanced and mature.

Q: And finally, what can audiences look forward to this week?

Liam: Entertainment of all kinds. Lights, sound, set and of course great performances from our young Newington actors.
