Newington’s House Captains for 2025 have been named ahead of one of the College’s tightest, loudest and most colourful House Comp Days ever.
The outstanding Year 12 students who will lead Houses in 2025 are:
Bavin – Henry Corona | Mackay – Daniel Carter |
Clunies-Ross – Michael Caredes | Manton – Tom Williams |
Cooper – Oscar McConnell | Metcalfe – Zach Wilson |
Fletcher – Oliver Moore | Morrison – Leon Titmuss |
Gilligan – Lucas Veloz | Moulton – Eamon Jia |
Johnstone – Keaton Saggers | Prescott – Michael Kousparis |
Kelynack – Jeremy Latham | Tupou – Kyna Wild |
Le Couteur – Jack Mannix | Whitaker – Trishan Biswas |
House Captains were front and centre as House Comp Day unfolded, leading plenty of sideline encouragement as the senior school’s 16 Houses vied for the Clarke Shield.
This year, Bavin took the early lead, but Prescott fought back to win the competition for just the third time as a stand-alone House.
Students throughout the senior school put on stellar performances in competition across cross-year versions of debating, chess, football, handball, theatre sports and touch rugby.
With tweaked formats and an emphasis on collaboration and teamwork, the day mirrored the diverse interests of Newington students. Its departure from the traditional sport carnival meant students with talents both on and off the field could shine.
The campus was awash with colour as students donned t-shirts and bucket hats in their House colours.
Acting Head of Co-Curricular Mark Dickens said House Comp Day 2025 was marked by incredible enthusiasm and sportsmanship.
‘It was a fierce competition that required teamwork, persistence, thinking and athleticism,’ he said.
‘We saw Year 12 boys cheering on Year 7, football stars willing chess champions to win and plenty of laughs.’
House Comp Day is held twice a year – early in the year to include summer sports and again at the end of Term 3 to bring in winter games.
The Clarke Shield has been part of Newington life since Houses were first introduced by then-Headmaster Philip Le Couteur at the 1931 Speech Day.
The honour board that charts the years since it was first awarded in 1932 is a potted history of the College: it includes multiple wins by ‘School’ House, the House made up of Newington’s boarders, which claimed the shield 12 times in its first 14 years; a long winning streak by Kelynack from 1982 to 1989; the period when Houses were amalgamated into four from 1957-1973, and 2020 – the only year the Clarke Shield was not awarded thanks to the covid pandemic.
