Boarding Scholarships

A range of scholarships are on offer to students who wish to board at Newington College.

Edmund Webb Boarding House

Newington College opened in 1863 as a boarding school and has maintained a boarding facility since moving to Stanmore in 1880.

The Edmund Webb Boarding House accommodates up to 50 students from Years 9-12.

Rural and regional scholarships

Rural and regional scholarships are available to students in Year 9 and Year 10. Students must be Australian residents, live in a rural or regional area (defined as 100km or more beyond the Sydney metropolitan region), and board at Newington College until the completion of Year 12.

Students should demonstrate a strong performance in the Newington scholarship examination, excellence through supporting documentation (school reports, external competition reports, NAPLAN results), and the ability to contribute positively to the life of the College.

Rural and regional scholarships cover 50 per cent of the Boarding fee only.

There are two academic pathways available at Newington for the Year 11 Academic Scholarship recipients:

  • The NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC)
  • The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)

All students who are shortlisted for boarding scholarship will be invited for an interview to explore their own academic interests, their approach to learning and how they will contribute to the strong learning environment at Newington.

Current Newington stduents entering Years 9 – 12 may apply for boarding scholarships. Consideration will be given to current students who live in the greater Sydney region. 

Eileen M Johnson Scholarship

The Eileen M Johnson Scholarship was established by a regional Old Boy in memory of his mother. She was the one who insisted her son attend Newington after seeing first-hand the leadership and accomplishments of Old Newingtonians in their home area.

The Eileen M Johnson Scholarship is available to a regional student entering the school as a boarder at any level from Years 9 – 12. The scholarship extends to every year of the recipient’s secondary education, subject to the achievement of satisfactory standards and acceptable outcomes during each year the scholarship is awarded.

Students should demonstrate a strong performance in the Newington scholarship examination, excellence through supporting documentation (school reports, external competition reports, NAPLAN results), and the ability to contribute positively to the life of the College.

The Eileen M Johnson Scholarship is subject to means testing, and covers full or part-remission of full boarding fees.

Rev James Phillips Scholarship

The Rev James Phillips Boarding Scholarship is named after the Reverend James Phillips following a bequest by his son, Arthur. Arthur Phillips graduated from Newington in 1887, was President of the Old Newingtonians Union in 1910 and later a member of the College Council.   

The Rev James Phillips Scholarship is available to a student entering Newington as a boarder at any level from Years 9 – 12 who is the child of a minister of religion.

Students should demonstrate a strong performance in the Newington scholarship examination, excellence through supporting documentation (school reports, external competition reports, NAPLAN results), and the ability to contribute positively to the life of the College.

How to apply

All students applying for a Newington College Scholarship must sit the scholarship test. The test is administered by Academic Assessment Services.

Applications for 2025 scholarships are now closed.

Applications for 2026 scholarships will open in late 2024.
