About

Diversity and Social Justice Scholarships are awarded to students from diverse cultural, social, and economic backgrounds, including those of First Nations or Tongan heritage, children from refugee or asylum-seeker families, and those who face barriers to educational access. Well-rounded, enthusiastic applicants who demonstrate sound academic attitude and achievement, exemplary work ethic, character and leadership across a broad range of disciplines are encouraged to apply.

New and current students can apply using the links below.

To be eligible for a Diversity and Social Justice Scholarship at Newington, applicants may be students entering into Years 7, 9, or 11. Both current and new students may apply for Diversity and Social Justice Scholarships.

Applicants must be Australian citizens or holders of an Australian Permanent Resident Visa. However, exceptions may apply in some circumstances. We will advise if you are eligible for a scholarship with different residency or citizenship requirements.

Student selection is based on the following:

  • demonstrable sound performance in the Newington College scholarship examination
  • an exemplary work ethic, outstanding character and leadership skills
  • enthusiasm and capability in co-curricular activities including sport and/or creativity
  • review of applications and, if shortlisted, subsequent interviews.

Students applying for this opportunity must demonstrate excellence through a range of supporting documentation. This includes:

  • recent school reports showcasing academic performance
  • awards or certificates from external competitions
  • NAPLAN results as evidence of academic aptitude
  • if required, any other documentation requested by the College.

Successful students will need to demonstrate a willingness to participate in the wide range of opportunities available at Newington, respect for our values and heritage, and other qualities that contribute positively to the College.

The families of short-listed students are subject to a financial means test. This is so that we can assist students who would not otherwise have the opportunity of a Newington education. Families will be required to demonstrate that their present and future financial circumstances would not allow them to fully finance their child’s attendance at Newington.

Diversity and Social Justice Scholarships cover full or partial remission of academic tuition fees.
