By Sam Eyers (Year 8)

Firstly, a bit of context. The Carlton Cup is an improvisation competition between Newington and PLC Croydon. This was its 16th year and Newington managed to win it with two fantastic final games which both scored 15/15. I interview Jasper Farley, who is in year 8, and achieved the MVP award, beating other year 12’s! I interviewed and asked him a few questions…

Firstly, what were your initial reactions when your name was read out and how did you feel?

Disbelief, I couldn’t believe that they had chosen me over all the other Newington boys, especially since I only took part in 1 of 2  scenes. I felt overjoyed it was my first ever Carlton Cup and I didn’t expect to beat all the other boys, especially since I was one of the youngest there by several years.

What game did you play?

Jasper: I participated in a change game, which is a game where the adjudicator can call out change and you must change the words you just said. For example, “it was a nice day” then the adjudicator shouts “CHANGE!” then the character may say something completely different like, “I hate my wife!”.

How would you persuade kids to join Drama and how would they join after school drama?

It is just a fun thing that any kid could do to push themselves out of their comfort zones. To join just turn up outside the Drama centre on Monday or Thursday afternoons. They are always looking for new recruits.
