Lebron James is undoubtedly one of the greatest and most accomplished players in NBA history. On the 7th of February 2023, in his 20th professional season, the King broke the NBA’s all-time scoring record, previously held by Kareem Abdul Jabbar. James’ ability to play at such a high level so deep into his career continues to defy logic making basketball fans wonder if his scoring record could be surpassed.

In recent years, NBA coaches and health staff have made a conscious effort to limit players’ minutes and the number of games they participate in to enhance their recovery, longevity, and performance. Over the past three years, all 48 players who participated in an annual all-star game missed an average of 28 games in the 2021-22 NBA season. This approach is beneficial for the playoffs, as players need to be at their physical best to have the highest chance of winning a championship. Former NBA player and coach Bill Cartwright says the season is now viewed as “not a sprint, it’s a marathon.” He believes “The healthier that you can stay during the course of a season, the better.” Decreasing minutes and games played is also a result of the player empowerment movement. Players are now more aware that increased longevity will further their brand and career-earning potential.
These changes have made it more challenging for players to surpass LeBron’s record, but it is possible. Some players could achieve this feat, as shown in the graph below, which features top NBA scorers.

No player has the trajectory to break LeBron’s record within the same or shorter time frame. However, it is still possible for them to do so because many of these players rely more on skill than athleticism (unlike LeBron), allowing them to sustain a high level of play over their careers.
Despite not having played a single NBA game yet, many believe the 7’4″ French basketball phenom Victor Wembanyama has the potential to surpass LeBron James’ scoring record in the future. He is considered one of the greatest prospects of all time and is projected to be the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft. LeBron James has described the 19-year-old as an “alien” due to his ability to move fluidly with his tall and lanky frame.
