Launched during World Environment Week, the student-led Return and Earn Challenge has seen Newington students divert well over 3,000 drink containers from landfill in its first term, turning everyday recycling into direct funding for House common rooms.
Organised by the Sustainability Committee, led by Sunny Zhang (Year 12), the initiative was built around a direct financial incentive. Instead of pooling prize money across the school, every cent raised goes straight back into each respective House budget. This gave House Captains up to a 40 percent funding boost to spend on student amenities like table tennis equipment, common room furniture, or designated House charities.
To make the system practical on campus, the committee worked alongside school operations to deploy dedicated roller bins with restricted slot lids. The bins were padlocked to keep general waste out and ensure rival Houses could not raid each other’s collections. Volunteer bottle runners from Years 10 and 11 managed the transport of bags to the nearby Return and Earn facility on Addison Road, keeping the system running smoothly without placing extra demands on Year 12 seniors.
With Houses averaging between 100 and 200 containers each, the initiative demonstrated that clear logistics and direct incentives can quickly shift daily campus habits. The Return and Earn Challenge has established a permanent framework across all 16 Houses, making waste reduction an active part of College life.
