Newington has expanded its active transport facilities with the installation of dedicated bicycle racks across three campus locations, including main thoroughfares at the front of the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For years, students and staff cycling to campus were limited to storage by the rear cricket sheds, while others parked informally under stairwells. A prior campus survey showed that under one percent of students commuted by bike, with the lack of secure, visible parking standing out as a primary obstacle for everyday riders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Sustainability Committee spent months working to change that, actively advocating for practical infrastructure upgrades. Committee members scouted potential zones across the grounds, surveyed arrival routes, and submitted a detailed active transport proposal to Chief Operating Officer Ross Xenos. While operational planning required some site adjustments from the initial concept locations, the push resulted in three permanent installations across the grounds, adding low-profile stainless steel U-hoops where cyclists need them most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new racks provide immediate frame-locking capacity for road bikes and e-bikes near primary entry gates. With a single car space occupying roughly 15 square metres\u2014enough room to park up to 14 bicycles\u2014school operations will monitor daily rack capacity through Term 3 to assess demand for additional storage under the upcoming campus masterplan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
