Earlier this term, I had the opportunity to speak at a whole school assembly about gender equity, what it means, why it matters, and what it might look like here at Newington. What I didn’t say in that speech, because it wasn’t the right moment for it, is that this work has been going on quietly for a while now, and that there are students in this school who have been showing up for it every week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Gender Equity Committee meets every Wednesday lunchtime in W20. It is student-led, open to anyone, and has been running as a consistent presence in the school calendar for some time. The sessions vary, sometimes with structured discussion, others with working through a specific question or issue, but the underlying purpose stays the same: to think seriously about what gender equity means in practice, not just in principle, and to consider what our role as students is in shaping the culture of this school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This term, the committee’s work extended beyond those Wednesday sessions. We organised a school-wide gratitude initiative, supported mentor group discussions, and hosted an interschool Gender Equity Forum in the OBLT. Students from MLC, Sydney Grammar, and SCEGGS Darlinghurst joined us for an evening of structured discussion facilitated by student leaders from across the participating schools. It was one of the more meaningful evenings I’ve been part of at Newington as it demonstrated what becomes possible when students from different communities are given the space and the structure to engage seriously with difficult questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These forums are hosted by Newington once per term and rotate between schools, with each school hosting their own respective forum. They are open to senior students, particularly those in Years 10 to 12, and are supported by staff supervision and guest speakers from professional and community backgrounds. The interschool aspect matters a lot. Hearing how students from other schools understand these issues, what their communities are navigating, and where their thinking differs from ours, changes the quality of the conversation in a way that staying within one school community cannot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you are interested in being involved, the Wednesday lunchtime sessions are the place to start. There is no particular background required. The committee is a space for students who want to engage thoughtfully with questions that don’t have easy answers, and who understand that building a more equitable community is ongoing work rather than a single event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
