By Ryan Low

At the end of Term 3 every year, we farewell the outgoing class of Year 12s, to usher in a new era. Each and every Year 12 is a leader, but some are adorned with a title. This article introduces the house captains of 2025, asking them who they are and what they want to achieve as a leader.

BAVIN – HENRY CORONA

I am Henry Corona, Bavin house captain for 2025. With my vice captains Diesel James and Tyeson Hunt, we are aiming to continue the culture of success in Bavin throughout all spheres of the school as we move into our year of leadership.

In the coming year, I hope that in Bavin we continue creating long lasting, meaningful connections throughout the house, and continue our successes in the House Comp and House Singing events. We aim to continually appreciate the hard work and dedication of all the boys in Bavin in their respective areas of pursuit, and aim to show an abundance of support to each and everyboy

CLUNIES ROSS – MICHAEL CAREDES

My name is Michael Caredes, House Captain of Clunies-Ross. I play touch football in the Summer in the 2nds and 6ths Rugby in Winter.

I want to see my house being at least podium in all house competitions in 2025 and see a brotherhood developed as a house, really pushing for culture and togetherness as a house. I want to put my mark on the legacy of Clunies-Ross and make our leadership group one to remember.

COOPER – OSCAR MCCONNEL

My names Oscar Mcconnell and I’m the Cooper house captain. I love my rowing, as anyone who’s ever spoken to me will know, and have rowed in the senior eights these last two years. I’m currently in the 1st VIII and have loved my experiences this season. Outside of sport I love my humanities and especially my histories, doing all 5 units possible in the HSC.

As captain of Cooper House I hope to build on the work off the previous leadership team by continuing to further the house and school culture and the overall experience of the boys at the school.

FLETCHER – OLIVER MOORE

Hi, I’m Oliver Moore and I am the Fletcher House Captain for 2025. I really enjoy my sports, rowing and soccer and the co-curriculars that I do. In 2025, I would like to strive to build on what the most recent captains started, which is making Fletcher a strongly interconnected house where older and younger boys can talk to one another openly and make great friends to go with them while at Newington and beyond.

GILLIGAN – LUCAS VELOZ

Hello, I am Lucas Veloz, and I have the honour of being the Gilligan House Captain for 2024/25. Being at the school since kindergarten, I have gained a strong connection to school across the 12 years of attendance. Stemming from this connection I decided to run for house captaincy in a repayment of gratitude for all the college has done for me and to rectify the issues I perceive exist throughout the house and school beyond.

For the next 12 months I intend to develop a greater sense of camaraderie throughout Gilligan house and a stronger utilisation of the large space we are so lucky to have. Along with the other Vice-Captains Nathan and Harry we are beginning to develop ideas amongst each other to reach such leadership goals. Back in term 3 we trialled the touch football event during a mentor period, and we saw some great enthusiasm and participation from the entire house, suggesting a positive outlook from you boys on this idea.  Looking forward to a wonderful year in shaping the future of the house for the betterment of present and future students.

JOHNSTONE – KEATON SAGGERS

As a fresh house captain there is a lot I want to achieve, both in house and as school leader. For the development of the house, the leaders in Johnstone have decided on three key improvements and changes. The first is the chance to reintroduce Oasis Cup for Johnstone vs Kelynack on a Friday afternoon. Currently, the struggle with this event is the provision of time in mentor so we are working on finding a solution. Secondly, we would like to create a more unified effort on house support days where we can confine the house to a single game to support as a house, rather than individuals. Finally, there are some small refinements around the house such as the buddy system and vertical group relationship building. Overall, I would love to see Johnstone continue to build upon our friendly yet competitive reputation, making sure I leave Johnstone house in a strong and collected place for our future leaders.

KELYNACK – JEREMY LATHAM

Hi, my name is Jeremy Latham and I am Kelynack House Captain for 2025. You might recognise me from my endeavors within the Music and Drama departments, or as co-captain of the mighty 16ths Basketball team.

This year I am excited to be working with my leadership team Buddy Latham and Will Donnelley – we have a few new initiatives in the works (many of which are top secret and will not be divulged here). However, one thing we will be striving to uphold is the current culture of Kelynack as a place where every student is able to feel supported and welcomed by their peers. This is the Kelynack we have all been given the opportunity to rely on all through our schooling, so we would love to keep this going well into the future.

Above all, we hope for a podium finish in house singing.

LE COUTEUR – JACK MANNIX

My name is Jack Mannix and I am the Le Couteur house captain for 2024/25. I joined the school in year 3 at the Lindfield campus and have been so grateful for the opportunities presented in the classroom, on the sporting field and all aspects of school life. With this, the opportunity to lead my house is a position I am honored to take and will do my all to fulfill the expectations the role brings. The goal for the year ahead is to forge strong cross year group connections, provide younger boys leadership opportunities and maintain the strong house culture we are all proud of.

 MACKAY – DANIEL CARTER

I’m Daniel Carter, the new House Captain of Mackay for 2025. Along with my Vice Captains Lachlan Zhang and Sandy Jones, we are looking forward to a great new year for Mackay, full of promising developments within the house and outside of it. We have a few plans up our sleeves to bring to Mackay, some yet to be revealed, though all revolving around our central theme for the House for 2025. That is culture – a word that certainly gets thrown around a lot, with a lot of varying definitions. For us, culture means a few things. First of all, it means maintaining the locker room environment and house spirit that past Mackay leaders have expertly succeeded in creating. Ensuring this remains, and gets better, is a top priority. Secondly, it means that all the Mackay boys are buying into the House, and more importantly buying into each other. For the House, this looks like getting around everything at House Comp day, each student giving their all to every game, on and off the field or the court, belting their hearts out at House Singing, and cheering on every team from the firsts through tenths on House Support Day. Buying into each other, though, requires a bit more. It certainly involves all the aforementioned things, but it goes further than that, to mean watching Jesse, Jasper, and Dominik on Saturdays in the New Gym. To find out when Tristan and Nick’s next impro event is and get to the Enmore Theatre to cheer them on. To find out all the endless exploits of the House that no one yet knows and share them with everyone else and get there to cheer whoever it is on, even if you’re the only one. Thats what culture is, and that’s what Mackay is striving towards in the New Year. We’re turning Mackay from a House, to a Home.

MANTON – TOM WILLIAMS

I have been at the school since yr 7, I have been a 2-time SRC, I am gender equity and House captain, I have two main passions, music and baseball, I have played for 13 years, represented NSW for baseball at national tournaments and have become a coach for younger years. My favourite subjects are Industrial technology (wood tech) as I enjoy working with my hands, designing and crafting pieces of furniture and English as I enjoy studying how literature shapes the society we live in.

‘What do want to achieve as House Captain?’ Is a great question that I have been asked many times since being chosen as captain. I must say that I wish I could collaborate with my entire mentor group on this question, as Manton isn’t run by one person but rather every member of my mentor group. But my answer can be summarised by ‘seeing Manton happy’. That means seeing the students connections within the house develop to life long friendships, enjoyable house meetings, seeing my peers grow and succeed in their passions and to create a pride in Manton for the house that they are apart of. My whole reason for going for captain was because leaders before me had made decisions that didn’t represent the majority of the house but rather were the easy way out. I have made a promise to my house that all decisions will be executed in the interests of the students with complete transparency. My main common goal within the house is that people enjoy themselves, otherwise it doesn’t make sense to do these house meeting and other house activities.

METCALFE – ZACH WILSON

My name is Zach and I am currently doing the IB. I started at Newington in year 8 and I have loved every moment since. I love playing football and it’s a massive part of who I am and my school life as well. As captain of Metcalfe house for 2025, I would like to try and work to make the house a space for everyone to feel comfortable, happy and to build connections between all boys of different year groups in the house.

MORRISON – LEON TITMUSS

I’m Leon, Morrison House captain. At the moment, my life mostly revolves around sports, music and studying. I’m a big AFL fan and spend a lot of time playing it as well. I also enjoy water polo and athletics. Last year I started DJing as a hobby, and it has recently become a useful side hustle. During my captaincy, my aim is to create a cohesive house environment for Morrison, where the young boys feel comfortable interacting with and asking the older boys for advice, help etc.

MOULTON – EAMON JIA

My name is Eamon, and I am Captain of Moulton House. I take the IB and I enjoy tennis, mathematics and fitness, and am passionate about improving the world around me alongside constantly striving for self-improvement.

As house captain, I strive to make Moulton House (the best house in the school) an even more special, inviting and friendly space for all Moultonians. I hope that alongside fostering an environment where individuals are all able to excel to achieve the best, I am able to help contribute to the vibrant, diverse and inclusive environment in Moulton, where everyone is not just a peer but also a brother, including amongst those of different year groups. I am determined to allow every individual to be heard and truly feel as if one is part of something greater than oneself.

PRESCOTT – MICHAEL KOUSPARIS

Hello to everyone, I’m Michael Kousparis, the House Captain for Prescott for 2025. A bit about me, I love to play football (or as some call it – ‘soccer’), my summer sport is basketball, I value my academics, and a hobby of mine is to go fishing. Building off the back of a House Comp Day Win on my first day with this title, I’m only looking more forward to the coming year of leading Prescott House, I am passionate for this house, and value everybody in it. As House Captain, my purpose lies within my service to the house community. I aim to strengthen bonds between all boys in the house, I aim to develop a vibrant house culture where everyone flourishes, and I aim to nurture a positive outlook on going to school even on the most unpopulated days

TUPOU – KYNA WILD

Currently I am a student in year 12, and Tupou house captain. I am someone who loves my footy (AFL) and am keen to make an impact on my house. I hope to make my house an environment fit for all, and make my house meetings fun. My main goal is to bring more furniture to the house and bucket hats for all the boys in Tupou. I am going to make sure I leave a legacy on my house and the future boys of the college.

WHITAKER – TRISHAN BISWAS

My name is Trishan Biswas, I am the House Captain of Whitaker for 2025, leading the house alongside a wonderful leadership team of Michael Zhou (Vice-Captain of Minds) and Henry Lapham (Vice-Captain of Culture). A few things about myself, I have a passion for learning and developing my skills whether in Astronomy or Music and I highly value my academics as well as sport.

However, what I value more is making new, genuine and strong connections with people. My goal as the House Captain of Whitaker house is to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable, grows positively as people, and more importantly are empowered to achieve their best. On top of that, I aim to carry Whitaker’s collaboration with WAGEC (Women’s and Girls Emergency Center) and involve fellow Whitakans in service with WAGEC. I also strongly believe that doing little things such as incorporating mini vertical-group competitions will be the key to making Whitaker House evermore cohesive and united.
