The University of Connecticut Huskies have etched their names into NCAA basketball history once again, clinching back-to-back titles for the first time in 17 years. Their 75-60 victory over Purdue in the national championship game was a masterclass in every aspect of the game. As fans marvel at their recent triumph, many are left wondering: what sets UConn apart, and how have they achieved such success in recent years?

At the heart of UConn’s rise to prominence stands Coach Dan Hurley, who assumed leadership of the Huskies in 2018. Unlike other college programs, whose focus often lies on recruiting top high school sensations, Hurley prioritises cultivating a cohesive unit that values teamwork and skill development over individual prowess. Hurley’s adept navigation of new NCAA transfer and NIL rules has been instrumental in assembling experienced, deep, and well-rounded rosters annually. Using the transfer portal, he has acquired key players like Cam Spencer and Tristen Newton while ensuring the growth of recruits like Donovan Clinagan and Stephon Castle remains unimpeded. Additionally, Hurley’s system of hyper-aggressive defence and fast-paced offence has been key to their success.

Looking ahead, the future of UConn basketball may hold uncertainties. The composition of the team’s roster is set to change as many players make the leap to the NBA. However, one thing remains certain: the Huskies have carved themselves in history as one of the greatest college teams ever.
