Stanmore K-6

Wyvern House Preparatory School is our Kindergarten to Year 6 campus located in Sydney's Inner City.

From the Head of Stanmore K-6

"Boys are at their best when they are curious and inquisitive about what they are going to learn about; therefore it is essential that teachers are able to 'hook' boys into areas that interest them."

The foundation of a successful primary education is a robust and rigorous approach to teaching literacy and numeracy skills supported by a well–rounded curriculum. Beyond their primary years, students will need to learn how to be both literate and numerate in order to thrive. We use a phonetic-based approach to teaching reading and writing, and a ‘hands-on’ method to teach numeracy.

At Wyvern, we seek to provide high quality teaching to challenge and inspire boys. Having specialist teachers who know their subjects well and understand the needs of primary aged boys means we are able to nurture the budding artist, author, musician, sportsperson or IT guru of the future.

At Wyvern, we don’t limit students to one area of interest or expertise. We believe that all students are capable of giving everything a go and we encourage them to excel across the board.

Building Learning Power

Learning at Wyvern House is about encouraging each boy’s natural eagerness and inquisitive nature.

The ‘Building Learning Power’ Framework is the main Learning and Teaching model used at Wyvern House. Developed by UK cognitive scientist Professor Guy Claxton, this unique academic framework teaches boys to learn in an environment that is consistently challenging, significant and engaging.

Similar to the way we all need a regime of frequent exercise, a balanced diet and time to rest and refresh our bodies to maintain good physical and emotional health, the Building Learning Power model applies the same discipline of consistent practice, and a motivated and positive attitude to ensure that our boys grow to become ‘fitter’ learners.

Innovation and Technology

It is an exciting time to be learning at Wyvern. iPads are standard use for our prep boys with each boy being provided with a Newington-owned iPad Air 2 on commencement. Our blended-learning approach towards education is a radical one. It shows that we are unafraid to try out new systems, adapt and change the way we teach and assess, to ensure that learning remains interactive and relevant. In addition, your son will attain good technical skills required for an easy transition into high school.
