Scholarships Overview
Newington College’s scholarships program is focused on social justice in education.
Newington College scholarships
Newington College provides a range of scholarship options to boys with potential in general and specific areas.
In turn, we are looking for scholarship or bursary applicants who have:
- Strong academic ability or potential, with good reports that reflect effort and solid references from their school.
- Sound character traits and a potential to lead;
- A willingness to participate in a variety of educational and school-related activities.
- Evidence that they enjoy active participation and achievement in his co-curricular program, eg sport, visual arts, drama, music, debating or service learning projects (community service).
All boys applying for a Newington College scholarship must sit the scholarship examination.

Academic
Available to boys entering Year 7, Year 9 and Year 11. Current students may apply.
Applications for the 2022 Scholarship program will open on 1 November 2020 and close on 4 February 2021.

General Excellence
Available to boys entering Year 7, Year 9 and Year 11. Current students may apply.
Note: Applicants for a Halse Rogers Scholarship will be subject to a financial means test.
The F Stretton Jeffs (ON 1933) Scholarship
Available to boys entering Year 11. Current students are not eligible.
The Jim Millner (ON 1937) Scholarship
Available to boys entering Year 7. Current students are not eligible.
Note: Applicants for a Jim Millner Scholarship will be subject to a financial means test.
The Moffitt Family Scholarship
Available to boys entering Year 7. Current students are not eligible.
The Moffitt Family Scholarship will next be available in 2023. Applications will open in late 2021.
Note: Applicants for a Moffitt Family Scholarship will be subject to a financial means test.
Available to boys of promise entering Year 7 who would not otherwise have the opportunity of a Newington education. Current students are not eligible.
Note: Applicants for a Mulford Scholarship will be subject to a financial means test.

Boarding
Rural and regional scholarship
Available to boys entering Year 9 and Year 10 who live in rural and regional areas who board at Newington College until the completion of Year 12.
Available to a regional student entering the school as a boarder at any level from Years 9-12.
Note: This scholarship covers 100 per cent of boarding fees only. Tuition fees are still payable.
Rev James Phillips Scholarship
Available to a student entering Newington as a boarder at any level from Years 9-12 who is the son of a minister of religion.
Note: This scholarship covers 100 per cent of boarding fees only. Tuition fees are still payable.

Indigenous
The Chris Wild (ON1991) Indigenous Scholarship
Available for boys from an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background entering Year 7.
Applications for the Chris Wild (ON 1991) Scholarship will next be available for entry to Year 7 in 2022.
Other indigenous scholarships
A range of other scholarships are available to boys from Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander backgrounds entering any year at Newington College. Please contact the Admissions Department for more information.

Music
Available to boys entering in Year 7, Year 9 and Year 11. Current students may apply.
Applicants must show evidence of outstanding musical achievement or potential in one of five areas:
- Strings
- Choral
- Brass/Woodwind
- Organ
- Contemporary Music
The Joan Meats Pipe Organ Scholarship
Available to boys entering Year 7, Year 9 and Year 11 who show evidence of outstanding musical achievement or potential on the pipe organ. Consideration may be given to those who show exceptional ability on the piano and wish to move into playing the pipe organ.
The Joan Meats Pipe Organ Scholarship is awarded every three years. Applications for the 2020 bursary have closed. The next scholarship will be awarded in 2023. Applications will open in late 2021.
The Robert Walter Storr (ON 1938) Music Scholarship
Available to boys who are residents of Indonesia, Malaysia or Singapore, eligible to enter Year 10 or Year 11 and show exceptional musical ability.
The Robert Walter Storr (ON 1938) Music Scholarship is awarded every three years. Applications for the 2022 bursary open in early 2021.

Tongan
The Old Newingtonians Union (ONU) Tongan Scholarship:
Available to boys entering Year 10 or Year 11 who are residents of Tonga, attend Tupou College (Newington’s brother school) or who are sons or grandsons of Old Boys of Newington.
Applications for The Old Newingtonians Union (ONU) Tongan Scholarship open in July 2020.
