{"id":3406,"date":"2026-04-12T17:02:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T07:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newington.nsw.edu.au\/academic-guides\/academic-guide-years-11-12\/english-standard-2-unit-year-12-only\/"},"modified":"2026-04-30T15:23:30","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T05:23:30","slug":"english-standard","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.newington.nsw.edu.au\/academic-guides\/academic-guide-years-11-12\/hsc\/hsc-subjects\/english-standard\/","title":{"rendered":"English (Standard) 2 Unit (Year 12 Only)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Course Description<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Main Topics Covered<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HSC Course (Y12)&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>HSC COURSE (Y12)<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>The English Standard course consists of four main topics in Year 12, each covering a key aspect of English. <em>Common Focus Area: Texts and Human Experiences \u2013<\/em>&nbsp;is aimed at deepening student understanding of how texts represent human qualities and emotions associated with, or arising from, a range of human experiences.&nbsp;<br><br><em>Focus Area: Language, Identity and Culture \u2013<\/em>&nbsp;develops an insight into how language has the power to both reflect and shape individual and collective identity.&nbsp;<br><br><em>Focus Area: Close Study of Literature \u2013&nbsp;<\/em>develops interpretive skills based on close reading and evaluation of an extended text.&nbsp;<br><br><em>Focus Area: The Craft of Writing \u2013<\/em>&nbsp;can be interwoven into the study of all our texts and concepts throughout the year, encouraging students to read widely and reflectively to strengthen&nbsp;and extend their knowledge, skills and confidence as accomplished writers.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assessment \u2013 HSC course only<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are both internal and external assessments to support students in Stage 6 English.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Internal assessments encourage students to develop their reading comprehension,&nbsp;speaking and&nbsp;listening, viewing and writing skills across a range of forms and contexts.&nbsp;These tasks&nbsp;are designed to&nbsp;help students in their understanding and appreciation of language and literature, and to prepare students for their final examinations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final HSC examination will be in two separate papers.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Paper 1 focuses on Texts and Human\u00a0Experiences, and\u00a0involves (i) a reading comprehension task and (ii) an extended response on a prescribed text\u00a0(\u2018Henry Lawson (short stories)\u2019).\u00a0\u00a0<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paper 2 consists of three sections, focusing on Language, Identity and Culture (\u2018<em>The Quiet Girl<\/em>\u2018 (film)), Close Study of Literature (poetry of Oodgeroo Noonuccal \u2013\u00a0<em>My people<\/em>) and The Craft of Writing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Course Description Main Topics Covered HSC Course (Y12)&nbsp; HSC COURSE (Y12) The English Standard course consists of four main topics in Year 12, each covering a key aspect of English.
