Students must include\u202fa world language, English,\u202fMathematics,&nbsp;Science&nbsp;and a humanities subject in their course&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Requires student to complete\u202fthree compulsory core\u202fcomponents on top of their chosen subjects.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IB\u202fis:\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Focused on conceptual understanding\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Developed in local and global contexts\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Focused on effective teamwork and collaboration\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Differentiated to meet the needs of all learners\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Informed by assessment\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Based on inquiry\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a program designed for students who are prepared to complete a broad pattern of study and are intending on matriculating to university either in Australia or overseas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"requirements\">IB course requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1 wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"s1\">IB students must complete&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newington.nsw.edu.au\/academic-guides\/academic-guide-years-11-12\/ibdp-subjects\/\"><span class=\"s2\">six subjects<\/span><\/a> and three compulsory core components.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1 wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"s1\">At least one subject must be chosen from each of five groups:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"s1\">1.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newington.nsw.edu.au\/academic-guides\/academic-guide-years-11-12\/ibdp-subjects\/#group1\">English<\/a><br>2.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newington.nsw.edu.au\/academic-guides\/academic-guide-years-11-12\/ibdp-subjects\/#group2\">Languages<\/a><br>3.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newington.nsw.edu.au\/academic-guides\/academic-guide-years-11-12\/ibdp-subjects\/#group3\">Humanities<\/a><br>4.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newington.nsw.edu.au\/academic-guides\/academic-guide-years-11-12\/ibdp-subjects\/#group4\">Sciences<\/a><br>5.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newington.nsw.edu.au\/academic-guides\/academic-guide-years-11-12\/ibdp-subjects\/#group5\">Mathematics<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span class=\"s1\">The sixth subject can be a Group 6 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newington.nsw.edu.au\/academic-guides\/academic-guide-years-11-12\/ibdp-subjects\/#group6\">Arts subject<\/a> or a second subject from Groups 2-4.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) is a transdisciplinary subject that encompasses concepts and content across Group 3 (Humanities) and Group 4 (Sciences). Students can choose ESS to cover both Groups 3 and 4 at the same time, freeing them up to choose 2 subjects from another group. Example combinations are:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Group 6: Music and Theatre Arts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Group 6: Music and Visual Arts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Group 6: Visual Arts and Theatre Arts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ESS and a second subject from Group 2 Language Acquisition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ESS and a second subject from Group 3 Humanities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ESS and a second subject from Group 4 Science<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At least t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hree subjects&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(and no more than four)&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">must be Higher Level subjects<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Higher level subjects&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">involve a recommended 240 teaching hours.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The remaining subjects&nbsp;must be&nbsp;Standard&nbsp;Level subjects. Standard level subjects <span data-contrast=\"auto\">involve a recommended<\/span> 150 teaching hours.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The choice of HL and SL at this stage is indicative and will be finalised at the end of Term 3 of Year 11. The exception to this are Mathematics, Italian ab initio (only SL) and Spanish ab initio (only SL).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">xtended&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ssay&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(core component)&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is a 4000-word research<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">-based piece&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in an approved subject&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on a topic&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the students\u2019 choosing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. All decisions will include discussions with the Head of IB, Head of Languages and the Director of Studies.\u202f \u202fNewington reserves the right to determine a student ineligible for a particular language if there is any doubt regarding the student\u2019s prior learning and combined experience with the language.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students planning to study\u202fat an overseas or interstate university should check if they need specific\u202fprerequisite subjects.
