The accelerated Studies of Religion I course allows students to complete a rigorous one-unit HSC course within a single year. Through the study of Christianity, Islam, Australian Indigenous Spirituality, and the nature of religion, students engage in a structured inquiry into belief systems that have shaped cultures, values, and ethical thinking locally and globally. The course encourages students to critically explore how religious and spiritual traditions contribute to meaning, identity, and social cohesion in a complex and pluralistic world.
The accelerated structure combines intensive workshops in Term 4 of Year 10 with timetabled lessons across the first three terms of Year 11, enabling students to sit their HSC examination in Year 11 and free up senior study time in Year 12. This model supports learning continuity, academic independence, and opportunities for extension and enrichment while fostering a focused and motivated learning environment.
Overall, the accelerated Studies of Religion I course offers a sustained exploration of religious traditions and spiritual perspectives, developing students’ analytical skills, empathy, and capacity to engage thoughtfully with diverse beliefs in modern Australian society.
The Preliminary course introduces students to the nature of religion and invites exploration of Aboriginal Spirituality, Christianity, and Islam through their core beliefs, practices, and worldviews. The HSC course builds on this foundation by examining religion and Aboriginal Spirituality in Australia since 1945 and undertaking in‑depth studies of Christianity and Islam, exploring significant individuals, religious practices, and ethical issues in contemporary contexts.
