The Preliminary and HSC courses in Latin allow students to explore the ancient Roman culture, thought and literature. Through their studies, students continue to evaluate the influences of Latin on the languages, cultures, literature and traditions of other lands.

 

Main Topics Covered:

PRELIMINARY COURSE (Y11)HSC COURSE (Y12)
Study of a range of extracts of texts in the original Latin and of Latin works in translation.Students study a prescribed prose and a prescribed verse text by looking at extracts in the original Latin and the work as a whole in translation. Students will focus on:

  • literary features

  • context

  • historical, religious and cultural references, ideas, beliefs, arguments and practices

  • language and linguistic features of these texts
