Industrial Technology – Timber
What is this course?
This course develops students’ knowledge and understanding of timber and related processes and technologies through the planning and production of quality practical projects. Students learn to select, use and apply timber, tools, machines and processes safely and skilfully while engaging in thoughtful, hands-on problem-solving.
The course aims to foster perseverance, resilience, concentration, self-reliance and sound judgement through practical timber-based learning. Students are encouraged to think with care, question possibilities, respond to challenges and refine their work through reflection, evidence and purposeful action.
Students develop timber-related skills through selecting materials, using hand and power tools, operating machinery safely and producing quality projects. They also learn to communicate ideas through drawings and written documentation, making informed design decisions and evaluating how effectively their projects meet intended purposes.
Core modules in Year 9 develop knowledge and skills in the use of materials, tools and techniques related to timber. These are enhanced and further developed through the study of specialist modules in Cabinetwork and Wood Machining in Year 10.
Why study this course?
Students who enjoy practical work, creative problem-solving and learning through making are well suited to this course. Lessons are largely workshop-based and require students to work both independently and collaboratively, think carefully about process and safety, and persist as they improve the quality of their work.
Practical making is beneficial for both the mind and the body. It can also help complement the academic day providing a different type of learning environment. Students who study this course can build confidence and their ability to solve problems and effectively manage their time.
This course forms the foundational skills for the Industrial Technology Timber HSC course.
